Artist Statement:
Describing phenomenon in and about the body necessitates complex systems of visualization. This need has obliged creating in multiple layers. Yet, this layered complexity had to work beyond literal signification, to address the animated, living system of the body and the abstract and psychological forces that alter it. Suiting such requirements, my practice attempts to engage in a dialogue between iconographic and naturalistic styles of figurative representation and psychologically charged abstraction. These combinations have an element of dynamic opposition. The fixed, "surgical" line work operating as a framing for loose, organic paint effects is one expression of this opposition. The tension between abstraction or iconography and precise description in the figure is additionally used for this dynamic. Pain, repair, metamorphosis, and homeostasis are ideas best represented through these distortions. By maintaining ambiguity in figurative forms, I can reflect on the uncertain future that defines what "human" is. This is a definition that will undoubtedly be altered and shifted in the unfolding future of humanity.
